First Aid Kit

Here is some helpful tips and videos for providing first aid for your pet.  Please consider having a pet first aid kit if you don’t already have one.  Many people have first aid supplies for their family and many items can be used for your pet.  If you have an injured animal, do emergency care and treatment to stop/slow or protect the injury, then get your pet to the vet as soon as possible.  Make sure that you muzzle your pet, an injured dog that is in pain may try to bite you out of fear and or pain; even if you have the sweetest dog that wouldn’t hurt a fly.  Always protect not only yourself, but your pet too. The following video has some good tips on what you might need to have on hand for your pet:

Choking Dogs

Watch the videos below for how to help choking dogs.  Dogs like to chew on many different things; it’s what they do.  Be sure to always inspect your dog’s toys to determine if they are dangerous or too small for your pet.  Bones or teething bones can be hazardous when they get small or break off into smaller pieces.  Items that can be possible choking hazards should be kept out of reach as much as possible.  You may have a ninja dog that can get to leftover bones from your dinner, cooked bones can splinter or get stuck in your dog’s mouth or windpipe.  I hope these videos will help if you find your dog choking.  Again, it is wise to take your dog to the vet, even if you clear the blockage (to make sure there isn’t further injury) and especially if you try to dislodge the item your pet is choking on and you aren’t able to remove it.

CPR

Hopefully you will never be in a situation where you need to perform CPR on your pet, but if you do, these videos will help you know what to do in an emergency.  CPR needs to be performed on any animal not breathing and/or whose heart is not pumping or pumping very poorly.  This may be caused from things like a heart attack, drowning or even a heat stroke.  The most important aspect of performing CPR on a pet is to keep circulation pumping to and from the heart, if not performed, lack of the heart pumping blood through the body may lead to death.  Even if you don’t perform the steps perfectly, doing something is better than doing nothing.  I hope these videos will help you if CPR is needed for your pet.  To perform any first aid saving technique, you have to try to stay calm in order to help your pet.  Then get your pet to a vet to be checked out as soon as possible, you may even want to start the trip to the vet while performing CPR (have someone else drive of course).
